Emergency Cold Weather Shelter

The Emergency Cold Weather Shelter was created and grew from the same ‘organic’ approach to ministry as many of the Mustard Seed LifeGroups here at Trinity. The ministry was started by two Neighbors in Need volunteers who were shocked by the reality that a couple of winters ago, our Saturday morning guests were arriving with blue hands and frozen bodies. They simply made the statement “We need to do something about this!”

From this conviction was born the proposal of the Emergency Cold-Weather Shelter for South Snohomish County.  After spending nine months researching and creating policies and procedures, we opened our shelter network with other congregations.  Our criteria for opening the shelter network is when the temperature falls below 33 degrees F for an anticipated four-hour period overnight.  For the most up-to-date information, please call 425-778-2159, ext. 296.

We thank the many volunteers who participate in this seasonal ministry: people who prepare hot meals and sack lunches, who host our guests overnight, who transport our guests over snowy and icy roads, who listen with compassion to people who could not sleep, and who extend themselves as Christ’s hands and heart to our neighbors in their deepest time of need.

Let us know if you are interested in participating for the 2011-2012 winter season — your faith and energy are always appreciated! For more information, contact Mark and Sue Waldin.
