Neighborhood Youth Alliance (NYA) provides a safe environment for 35-50 homeless and low income school-age children, one third of which are not in school, to help build basic education and life skills, while their families engage in support services. Neighborhood Youth Alliance (NYA) serves homeless and low income youth ages 6 to 16.
* Many of the participating NYA children are unable to write, recognize numbers and letters, and several do not attend school regularly.
* Many of the participating children are new to Snohomish County or the Edmonds/Lynnwood area their families need help understanding and navigating the resources for shelter, locations for free meals and other support services.
These conditions have translated to minimal school participation and a lack of awareness of basic life skills that can help break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. With the diverse nature of the broader Neighbors in Need population, it is also important that the NYA participants are in close proximity to their families to build the trusting relationship important to supporting and growing the NYA children.
Neighborhood Youth Alliance works to increase the effectiveness of communication with the children and their families with primary language. We are committed to building trust and confidence with families to allow education of their children with a family support network. It is our goal to educate and inform both children and their families on literacy, math, and life skills. Most importantly, we serve the children and their families where they are at, in their place of community, by providing a link between school and families.
We rely on volunteers from Trinity and the community to staff this outreach program. If you are interested in helping once a month or once a quarter, please contact Theresa Greco at theresa.greco@comcast.net. We are also available on Facebook at Neighborhood Youth Alliance. Prepare yourself for a heartwarming experience with our children in need.
