A Letter from President Sue Carlson
January 16, 2020
Dear Fellow Members of Trinity Lutheran Church,
What an energetic day we had last Sunday, January 12! The sanctuary was full for our one worship service together. The band, a gospel choir and organ all gave us time to praise God in our own way.
We then turned to our fellowship time and Annual Congregational Budget Meeting. Delicious, abundant food and faithful kitchen workers were all appreciated.
The meeting began with the nod to our new slate of candidates for the 2020-2021 council. They will now get to “shadow” those they replace for a more seamless transition.
Next, came the awaited report on the Values-Direction-Action (VDA) process of last fall. Pastor Hector led us through the steps the team followed through three retreats and sub- committee meetings. You can get a copy of that in the office or read it online. To say the outcome was exciting for our future is something, but to truly live this we will have the tagline: Building, Belonging, Becoming. The members in attendance affirmed that this will be our focus.
Finally, we needed to do the work of the congregation by passing a budget for 2020. Our Constitution requires a quorum (met) to authorize the spending for the calendar year. Our Treasurer, David Gunderson presented the numbers for our budget that would be balanced according to our 2019 income and projected 2020 income. After a motion to accept, discussion ensued.
Because the salary for an Associate (2nd) pastor was not included in this budget, (a #1 Focus in the VDA process), an amendment was brought forth to add this to the budget. As our time limit for the use of the room was maxed out, due to our contract with the Chinese Church, the attendees accepted the council recommendation that more discussion was needed and a special congregational meeting is scheduled to allow for this discussion.
The Executive Council has called a special congregational meeting on February 9, 2020 at 11:00 AM.
Currently the motion on the floor: To accept the 2020 budget as presented
Amendment: To add to the staffing budget $40,000.00 for an Associate Pastor.
Some discussion will center on having an unbalanced budget, or some creative way of reaching our goal. The council will be working on this proposal before the meeting.
Praise God that the Spirit was present in our meeting. There is no doubt the Lord is calling us to be more than what we can see now. The people of Trinity showed their commitment and desire to proclaim the Gospel in word and action.
Please continue to pray for wisdom in our decision that witnesses to God’s mission here. I am excited for our future and the energy our members have for Trinity Lutheran Church.
In Christ and your service,
