Observed throughout the month of February, Black History Month honors the history, cultural contributions, resilience, and lives of Black Americans. Initiated in the early 20th century and formally recognized nationally in the 1970s, this observance invites reflection on the central role Black communities have played—and continue to play—in shaping the history, culture, and future of the United States.
Black History Month is both a celebration and a call to deeper learning. It encourages honest engagement with the stories of creativity, leadership, resistance, and faith that have emerged in the face of injustice and exclusion. This month—and always—communities are invited to listen, learn, and commit to building a society guided by justice, equity, and love.
Scripture
“So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them.” — Genesis 1:27
“But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” — Amos 5:24
Together, these scriptures affirm both the sacred dignity of every person and God’s unyielding call to justice.
Prayer
Creator, we lift up and thank you for our Black siblings who have shaped history. We pray that the learning happening this month in schools, homes, and workplaces will be meaningful and deep-rooted. We pray for open hearts and minds, and spirits willing to learn and be transformed by you.
May this month be a time of curiosity and sharing, conversation and celebration, challenge and encouragement. Loving God, help us to dig deeper, look closer, and think bigger.
In Jesus’s name.
Amen.
(Prayer by Canon Carla Robinson, Episcopal Diocese of Olympia)
