National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Updated: 15 minutes ago

Observed each January, National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month calls attention to the ongoing reality of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. First declared in 2010, this month invites acknowledgment of those currently experiencing exploitation, as well as those who have escaped and continue the long journey toward healing and freedom.

Although slavery is often thought of as a practice of the past, human trafficking remains a global crisis. Millions of people—children and adults alike—are trapped in situations of forced labor and sexual exploitation, including here in the United States. Traffickers rely on violence, threats, deception, debt bondage, and manipulation to strip people of their freedom and dignity. This month urges awareness, vigilance, and solidarity in the work toward justice and liberation.

Quote

“Human trafficking is an open wound on the body of contemporary society, a scourge upon the body of Christ. It is a crime against humanity.” — Pope Francis

Human trafficking is not only a legal and moral issue, but a profound spiritual one—calling communities of faith to respond with courage, compassion, and action.

Prayer

O God, our words cannot fully express what our minds struggle to comprehend and our hearts feel when we hear of children and adults deceived, transported, and exploited for the sake of greed. Our hearts are heavy and our spirits ache as dignity and human rights are violated through threats, deception, and force.

We cry out against the degrading practice of trafficking and pray for it to end. Strengthen the fragile-spirited and the brokenhearted. Make real your promise to fill your children with love that is tender and restoring. Give us wisdom and courage to stand in solidarity with those who suffer, that together we may find paths to freedom—your gift to all.

Amen.
