May is Older Americans Month

Older Americans Month

Overview

Each May, the nation honors Older Americans Month (OAM), a tradition started in 1963 under President John F. Kennedy. What began as a week to recognize older adults has grown into a full month dedicated to celebrating the countless ways older Americans enrich our lives. This year’s theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” challenges outdated narratives and affirms the power, vitality, and diversity of older adults across the country.

At Trinity Lutheran Church & Schools, we lift up the elders in our community—those whose stories shape us, whose presence grounds us, and whose faith continues to inspire future generations.

Scripture

“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.”Proverbs 16:31 (NRSV)

This verse reminds us that age is not a decline, but a sacred achievement. To live long and love well is a gift worthy of deep respect.

Prayer

God of love, We thank you for the gifts of wisdom, experience, and grace you have bestowed upon our elders. As we celebrate their contributions to our communities and nation, we pray for their continued health, strength, and joy. May they find comfort and support in loved ones, and may their stories and guidance inspire the generations that follow. Bless them, that they may continue to enrich our lives with their presence and purpose. Amen.

  • Be a Good Neighbor: Spread awareness of local resources for elder care, transportation, and meals.
