Reflecting on Initiative 001 and Initiative 638 through ELCA Social Teaching & Trinity's Diversity & Inclusion Ministry

Dear Trinity Family,

As followers of Christ, our faith isn't meant to stop at the church doors—it accompanies us into our daily lives, our neighborhood, and the public square. As we look ahead to the upcoming election on November 3, 2026, Washington voters will consider two significant citizen-backed initiatives: Initiative 001 (concerning the Parents' Bill of Rights) and Initiative 638 (concerning transgender participation in K–12 athletics).

We know that navigating ballot measures through the lens of faith can feel complex. That is why Trinity’s Diversity & Inclusion Ministry (DIM) has prepared an educational resource guide for our congregation, grounded in scripture, ELCA social teaching, and Trinity’s core values.

Our goal is never to tell anyone how to vote. Rather, we want to offer clear facts, demographic data, and thoughtful questions to support your own prayerful Christian discernment. As Lutherans, we hold space for "bound conscience"—recognizing that faithful Christians can engage the same issues, read the same scripture, and arrive at different conclusions, while remaining deeply united in Christ’s grace and welcomed at the same table.

Linked below, you’ll find a discernment guide, including an overview of both measures, statistical realities, and reflections through the lens of our shared ministry values. We invite you to read, reflect, and pray as you prepare to make your voice heard at the ballot box this fall.

In Christ,
