September is Suicide Prevention Month

ree

Each September, communities across the nation observe National Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time to remember lives lost, to support those who have been impacted, and to work together in raising awareness about prevention. Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, but it is also preventable. With compassion, education, and resources, lives can be saved.

Breaking the silence around suicide is one of the most powerful tools we have. Conversations that offer presence, honesty, and hope can help lift the weight of isolation and despair.

Scripture

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” — Isaiah 41:10

This promise reminds us that no one walks alone. God’s love and strength meet us even in the darkest places, offering the courage to take the next step.

Prayer

God our Creator,

You give breath to each person you made. You treasure the gifts of every unique life. But when life becomes a burden rather than a gift, when days become endless nights, shine your light upon us.

Where no one seems to understand, embrace us with your presence. Where there is despair, bring hope. Where there is shame, give value and worth. Where there is emptiness, bring fulfillment. Where there is suffering in mind and body, bring healing.

God of hope, hear our prayer for life.

Action

We can all help prevent suicide:

  • Know the signs – Learn how to recognize when someone may be struggling.

  • Listen without judgment – Sometimes presence is more powerful than words.

  • Share resources – Connect people to support like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

  • Spread awareness – Share stories and information that reduce stigma and encourage open conversations.
