Intersex Awareness Day

ree

October 26 is Intersex Awareness Day, commemorating the first public demonstration by intersex people in 1996. The day brings attention to the rights and dignity of intersex individuals and raises awareness about harmful medical interventions and social stigmas that have too often silenced their voices.

Intersex people are born with natural variations in sex characteristics—including chromosomes, gonads, hormones, or genitals—that don’t fit typical definitions of male or female. These variations are a normal part of human diversity, not something to be “fixed.”

As people of faith, we affirm that every person bears the image of God. Intersex Awareness Day calls us to honor the beauty of God’s diverse creation and to stand for the human rights and bodily autonomy of all.

Quote

“So God created humankind in God’s own image, in the divine image, God created them, male and female and all that is between, God created them.” — Genesis 1:27, The Inclusive Bible

This passage expands our understanding of God’s image — one that includes the fullness of gender and biological diversity.

Prayer

Creator God,

Thank you for the diversity of your creation and the beauty that exists in all bodies.

We pray for our intersex siblings — that they may feel loved, protected, and affirmed.

Grant wisdom and compassion to families, communities, and healthcare providers.

May we work toward a world where every person’s body is respected and celebrated as part of your divine design.

Amen.
