We could call it an "average" fourth Saturday of the month. We know that we will have a large guest count will including several new faces. Each "average" becomes memorable as we listen to fears or anger, and often to good news. Each guest is welcomed and their feelings affirmed.
We had a special feel-good experience this morning. A young family came in, husband, wife and their toddler son. They were a classic middle-class family, well dressed, and clearly enjoying their time together. When Jude greeted them, they explained that they had been destitute a few years ago. Neighbors in Need had been an important support. Both are now employed, housed and enjoying family life.
Our team from Gloria Dei plans and cooks for our end-of-month rush. They served 125 plates of sausage patties, biscuits and gravy, fruit juice and milk. And of course! They prepared burritos. It was a busy kitchen.
The entire congregation at Gloria Dei actively supports the breakfast team with donations of pantry foods and clothing. Thank you.
Members of the congregation also donate pet foods and treats for pets. Thank you for understanding that our Neighbors' pets are seriously life-support.
Our pantry served 87 Neighbors and 4 families this morning.
The medical team was busy as well. Christine and Gabriel with Advocates Recovery Services cared for 13 Neighbors. Some needed wound care, some needed blood pressure or blood sugar checks. All benefitted from the professional attention.
We had a new understanding of our clothing bank this morning. There is always a long line of uncharacteristically patient Neighbors who are waiting for one-on-one shopping with Rick, Peggy and their trained volunteers. This team has gotten to know many of the Neighbors and remember their preferences. It is common for them to tell a Neighbor that they have a particular garment that they think they might like. This respectful care surely must be a big deal.
Cody is using his time to create art. He hopes to build a market for his work.

Enjoy the sunshine. May our Neighbors find shade.
