Neighbors in Need has been serving every week for almost twenty years. Still every Saturday is different and always rewarding.

Each October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month calls us to compassion and action for those affected by breast cancer. Though remarkable progress has been made in early detection and treatment, 1 in 8 women will receive a diagnosis during her lifetime.

Each year on October 10, the world comes together to observe World Mental Health Day—a time to reflect, connect, and advocate for greater understanding of mental health.

Each October, we observe Down Syndrome Awareness Month—a time to celebrate the unique gifts, talents, and humanity of individuals with Down syndrome.

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed each year on October 2, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

Observed annually on the last Wednesday of September, National Women’s Health and Fitness Day calls attention to the importance of women’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Each September, communities across the nation observe National Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time to remember lives lost, to support those who have been impacted, and to work together in raising awareness about prevention.

Every September, libraries across the nation celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month, encouraging everyone—especially students—to get their own library card.

Each September, communities across the country recognize National Recovery Month, lifting up the millions of people in recovery from substance use and mental health challenges.

Observed every year on August 30, National Grief Awareness Day encourages open conversations about loss and provides support for those navigating grief.

Each August, we observe National Immunization Awareness Month, recognizing the life-saving role vaccines play in promoting public health.

We could call it an "average" fourth Saturday of the month. We know that we will have a large guest count will including several new faces. Each "average" becomes memorable as we listen to fears or anger, and often to good news. Each guest is welcomed and their feelings affirmed.

World Mosquito Day is observed on August 20 each year to highlight the ongoing threat posed by mosquitoes, which are responsible for transmitting deadly diseases such as malaria, dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever.

International Peace Month was first observed in August 1926, when leaders from around the world gathered in Germany to discuss peace efforts in the wake of the First World War. Nearly a century later, this month still serves as a reminder that the work of peace is ongoing and that each of us has a role to play.

It's mid-summer which means we had scant crew this morning. To quote Avis, "I perspired!" Everyone multi-tasked. We are a willing community.

August is National Breastfeeding Month—a time set aside to honor, support, and advocate for nursing families across the country.

Civility is more than politeness—it is a spiritual discipline that honors the dignity of others and helps build bridges across difference.
